Studying abroad doesn't start when you submit applications — it starts 12–18 months earlier. This is the full map of every phase: where you are, what to do next, and when to start so you make your target intake.

Define your study goals, level, and your family's budget — the foundation for every later decision.

  • Identify your major and career goals
  • Assess your academics, activities and budget
  • Plan standardized tests (IELTS/TOEFL, SAT/ACT if needed)

Research and build a school list that fits your profile, budget and scholarship odds — balancing reach schools with safe choices.

  • Build a list of 6–10 schools by likelihood
  • Compare tuition, living costs and scholarships
  • Check entry requirements and deadlines

Assemble a complete academic and personal application and hit the required test scores before deadlines.

  • Finish essays, recommendation letters, transcripts
  • Reach your IELTS/TOEFL and SAT/ACT scores
  • Prepare a preliminary proof-of-funds file

Submit on time, track results, and negotiate financial aid to optimize your cost.

  • Submit applications online + application fees
  • Apply for scholarships and financial aid
  • Compare offers and aid packages

Commit to a school and finalize your proof of funds to receive Form I-20, then enter the visa process.

  • Confirm enrollment + submit financials to get the I-20
  • Pay the SEVIS fee, file the DS-160, book the interview
  • Do a mock interview and prepare your documents

Finish the last steps before you fly and get ready for student life in the U.S.

  • Book flights, arrange housing and insurance
  • Join AAE's pre-departure orientation
  • Register for classes and get to know your school
